Standard(s): ELAGSE7RL3: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how settings shape the characters or plot).
Essential Question:
How do writers show us what characters are like in their literature without telling us directly?
What can we infer about a character based on the clues given to us by the author?
Based on our inferences, how would this character participate in modern social media?
Warm-up: YOU ONLY NEED TO WRITE YOUR ANSWER FOR THIS WARM-UP.
Choose a character from one of the three fairy tales we read yesterday. List one thing for each of the bullet points below. If something is not applicable, think about what a character might say or do (make an inference).
Work Session:
-5-8 minutes - Students will take narrative plot quiz.
-10 minutes - Students will finish their story summaries in which they map out narrative plot structure.
-Student groups with the same stories will share their responses as the teacher comes around to check for understanding.
-The teacher will clarify the parts of the story summaries about which students are confused.
-The teacher will introduce the concept of direct and indirect characterization to students.
-Using guiding questions, the teacher will help students connect what they’ve learned about characterization to modern social media (in preparation for tomorrow’s activity).
Closing: -Students will watch a short film and make inferences about what the director might want the audience to know about the character presented. safeshare.tv/w/seEULmutkg
