Objective:
Language Arts combines the skills of reading and writing. This class will focus on reading a wide range of material so that you can develop a literacy that encompasses a diverse range of media.
How does this relate to STEM education? The skill-based aspect of reading and writing is fairly straightforward. In order to engage with the STEM community, you must be able to read critically the ideas of others. You must also be able to write your own coherent ideas in order to communicate them to your colleagues and to the public. Our Language Arts classroom is going to be a place where ideas are brought to the table and assumptions are challenged. This allows us to adopt multiple perspectives and think about the world in new and interesting ways. It is this mindset that will allow you to engage with and solve all the problems you may encounter in the sciences and beyond!
Materials:
Students are expected to have an electronic or hard copy of the following books:
1st Semester Books: Lord of the Flies, William Golding
American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793, Jim Murphy
2nd Semester Books: TBA
